The course starts in Bolivia, and, at the same time, we start up the five school canteens that we promote to improve student nutrition. As you can see in the image, at the Pedregal school the boys and girls have released the plates, glasses and spoons that were given to them at the end of last year.
In the municipality of Vacas we only had canteens in the Juntutuyu and Parko Khocha schools. Since 2022, at the express request of the educational communities and local authorities, we expanded the action to 3 new centers (Vacas, Pedregal and Cañada Grande) where food was prepared twice a week. With the support of the Municipality and with this intervention they are prepared daily.
The municipality deals with the acquisition of dry foods (such as rice, lentils, oil, sugar, etc.); mothers and fathers of families provide the labor for the preparation of food and supply the canteens with fresh food such as potatoes and vegetables from the orchards that we promote. Global Humanitaria also provides essential proteins that they hardly consume, such as meat and eggs. Also, gas for cooking. In Cochabamba, there is a 22.1% prevalence of chronic malnutrition in children under five years of age. Food deficiencies, in terms of quantity and quality, have their origin in the poverty of families, in the decrease in soil fertility and the scarce or almost non-existent diversified production. Added to this are eating habits poor in vitamins, proteins, and minerals, especially in rural areas, with negative effects on health. Thus, there are cases of malnutrition in minors who present chronic malnutrition or short stature and obesity at the same time.
