In our area of work, and in parallel to the resumption of school activity, we carry out actions to improve access to adequate food for children and their families, in the municipalities of Vacas Tarata and Arbieto.
1) Thus, in coordination with the Vacas Health Center (Bolivia), we have carried out the first nutritional evaluation campaign for schoolchildren from five educational centers where Global Humanitaria promotes school canteens: Juntutuyo, Pedregal, Cañada Grande, Parko Khocha and Vacas. With the support of health personnel from the municipality, we have carried out:
- Height and weight controls, distributed vitamin C and dewormers (mebendazole)
- Session on health care and nutrition.
2) We have distributed meat to reinforce the nutritional contribution of school menus and gas for the kitchens
3) We have launched a new organic garden to train and provide an internship space for Agroecology Technical Baccalaureate students. To that end, we have worked the land and erected the building with the participation of parents of schoolchildren in turns.
The program is aimed at improving the health and nutrition of 725 boys and girls from 15 primary schools.
Climate change and food
At the beginning of April, at the Departmental Summit to Face Climate Change and Food Security, the effects of crops due to weather and the risk situation for peasant families due to the effects of climate change, deforestation, monocultures and water pollution.
In Arbieto, Tarata and Vacas, the drought and frosts registered since the beginning of winter are affecting potato, wheat and broad bean crops. All this makes it difficult for families to access adequate food, which is why, together with education and health, the promotion of family, school and community crops constitutes one of our fundamental lines of work in the area.
