Since the beginning of May, we have distributed supplementary nutritional support for 1,252 schoolchildren in the 14 reinforcement centers where we develop the educational program. This extra food aid is delivered once or twice a week (eggs and toasted rice) and is added to the complementary breakfast that we distribute daily.
At the same time, we have begun nutritional surveillance of students from preschool to sixth grade, based on height and weight controls in each center. The figures show us that:
- 424 schoolchildren [199 boys and 225 girls], 42%, show severe underweight
- 108 schoolchildren [39 boys and 69 girls], 11%, are underweight
- 411 schoolchildren [243 boys and 168 girls], 41%, have normal weight
That is, overall, more than half of schoolchildren are underweight. In addition to nutritional support, they need their family environment to improve their knowledge about food, nutrition and health to reverse their situation towards normality. Hence, we call on families to hold information sessions on the importance of properly feeding and caring for children at each stage of growth. Likewise, we will carry out individual nutritional monitoring to evaluate the evolution and progress achieved in the detected cases.
