In Sunderbans and Murshidabad, more than 2,100 primary school children are improving their basic literacy and math skills through the support classes we provide. This program promotes teacher training and academic improvement for students in public schools, which helps them remain in the education system.

While in Murshidabad, teachers participating in our program were discussing the figure of Matangini Hazra in the wake of Independence Day, in the Sunderbans, children’s attendance has been depressed due to the monsoons in recent weeks. In August, they also celebrated   Raksha Bandhan, or Rakhi Bandhan , a festival that celebrates the bond between siblings who place a sacred thread (Rakhi) around their wrists as a symbol of love and protection.

On the other hand, the Kumirmari medical center and mobile clinics in villages provided routine care to students and their families. The most common illnesses are associated with the monsoon: colds, flu, arthritis, and skin conditions such as scabies due to the rainy and humid climate, as well as some specific gynecological care for adolescents and girls. Likewise, as part of our child health program, all children attending tutoring classes receive supplemental nutrition to improve their nutrition.
