In Tumaco, we work with more than 1,900 primary school children using the “Let’s All Learn to Read” (ATAL) program, a resource designed to promote literacy development. Global Humanitaria provides ATAL training to teachers and supports them in the classroom, where they share guided practice and provide support for integrating the strategy. This occurs in the classroom and in settings such as school libraries and community centers. Families are also involved throughout the process, broadening educational horizons beyond the school context and fostering interaction and dialogue.

The program teaches phonological awareness, from the sounds of letters, to word construction. Children’s learning is both gradual and fun, using resources such as reading aloud, stories, songs, and games. Ultimately, it helps them read faster and understand what they read, which helps them improve in all areas of learning.

Promotion of school libraries and literary gatherings

During this period, the “Creative Writing Contest” was launched to foster creativity and critical thinking in students, while also seeking to encourage the habit of writing as a means of communication, reflection, and personal expression. Similarly, the contest aims to promote reading and writing as essential tools for learning and comprehensive development, in addition to recognizing and valuing student talent, generating confidence and motivation in those who participate. Finally, this process contributes to strengthening cultural identity and a sense of belonging through original productions that reflect the ideas, emotions, and visions of children.
