Global Humanitaria, within its child protection program in Tumaco, promotes actions in schools to prevent recruitment in children and adolescents. We do this in collaboration with the entire educational community.

To protect young people from exploitation and manipulation, it is essential to involve them in a narrative that allows them to understand their situation and act accordingly. So first our technicians approach with the schoolchildren

– what is child recruitment.

– how it happens.

– what consequences it has.

The schoolchildren themselves suggest ways to address the issue in the classroom and actions to be carried out. These were the proposals of students of the Popular Technical Institute of the Coast:

-Use posters and plays to prevent and reduce the risk of recruitment in children, adolescents and young people.
– Talks on topics related to child recruitment and the importance of mental health.
– They involved teachers and community members to raise awareness and foster a broader dialogue on the subject.

Likewise, after each activity spaces are offered for students to share their opinions and feelings. In addition to providing information on available resources for mental health and child recruitment prevention, information is offered to help recognize danger signs and associated risks.

The activity promotes self-esteem and resilience in young people, giving them tools to make informed decisions and resist external pressures.

The forced recruitment of minors is not only a serious security problem, but a severe violation of children’s rights.

Recruitment after peace agreements

The recruitment, use and use of minors in Colombia is closely linked to the persistence of armed conflict in several regions of the country, where illegal groups are fighting for territorial control. Among the most affected regions is Nariño with municipalities such as Tumaco, positioning itself as the most critical points of each department.

Recently, the Attorney General’s Office warned of the alarming increase in the forced recruitment of children and adolescents: until August 2025, 150 complaints of child recruitment were registered. According to the figures disclosed by the entity, in 2023 485 cases were presented, while in 2024 there were a total of 495 cases.
