On October 18, with the support of Global Humanitaria, the Municipal Summit on the Environment and Nutritional Food Security was held in Vacas (Bolivia) with the active participation of about 150 representatives of social and productive organizations, as well as institutions local and governmental, including the Secretary of the Environment of Cochabamba.

In this space for reflection and debate, three topics were especially discussed: water for life and agricultural production ; the environment and deforestation; and   Food and Nutritional Security in the region. The objective: to propose actions to address the water crisis and its impacts on food security and the environment, in the context of climate change .

“Give the earth a break, take care of our future”

Bolivia is a country especially affected by climate change and the most vulnerable population lacks the means to confront its impacts. In just a few years, entire lagoons have disappeared due to drought, the quality of soils and crops has worsened, reducing the availability of food, as well as employment opportunities. Many families are forced to migrate, withdraw their children from school and have them take on care tasks or work.

In this context, children and adolescents see their rights threatened, especially the right to health, protection and education. However, they are not passive victims . This has been demonstrated by schoolchildren from the IEP of Vacas, participants of the Global Humanitarian program “Kusi Kawsay” that launches actions to improve food security and education in the area. During the summit they broke into the room where the event asking that they give the earth a break and demanding that attendees protect children and their future, and find alternatives to the environmental and food problems that afflict the population of this municipality.

As Iris Alandia, project coordinator of Global Humanitaria Bolivia, tells us, “We celebrate the strength of the voice of the boys and girls of Vacas for their deep reflection that challenges us and calls us to continue acting to guarantee their right to live in protection against the climate, environmental and food security crisis.
