Until the end of the course we continue with the food delivery to schoolchildren from four different education centers: Nueva Cadenita, San Francisco Mollejón, El Caoba and Colonia Lourdes. The varied fruits that are distributed as well as the Incaparina, a fortified drink, are a source of many vitamins and minerals that help with kids’ development during their growing stage as well as fight malnutrition in the rural area of Petén. Due to the pandemic, the schools’ dining halls haven’t been able to operate; because of that, they give out rations already prepared. They also keep track of kids’ weight and height to evaluate their nutritional state.
In April we made the first donation of almost 6,000 rations for 493 schoolchildren. Before every delivery we try to talk with the families about themes linked with alimentary safety, so they get to know alternatives and resources they have within their reach. Moreover, we insist in the importance of planting fruits and vegetables in every house’s backyard.
Global Humanitaria encourages crops in community gardens and backyards with the help of groups of women. We reinforce their ability in agroecological production and commercialization with the objective of producing and elaborating food for both family consumption and for the generation of income through its sale. This process takes place thanks to the collaboration with the Ministery of Agriculture and Livestock.
