Global Humanitaria provides basic health care services from the Kumirmari Island Health Centre in the Sunderbans archipelago (Ganges Delta, India) where health services are very limited or difficult to access.
There, a team of doctors visits schoolchildren and their families. They also organize mobile clinics in villages, which they reach by boat. In December, around 390 people received treatment, primarily for winter-related illnesses such as colds, flu, coughs, and fevers, as well as rheumatic pains and skin diseases like scabies, caused by dampness. Gynecological care is also provided to adolescents and women participating in the Woman-to-Woman program , and dental and oral health problems are treated in children.
In parallel:
→, we distribute supplementary food to more than 1,200 children attending our after-school tutoring program. The communal meals, prepared in shifts by the students’ mothers, include boiled eggs, toasted rice with sprouted chickpeas, nuts, bananas, and cookies, improving their nutrition and academic performance.
Height and weight checks are carried out. The figures obtained show that, although the number of malnourished children has decreased, a high percentage (482 out of 1,252 children) are still underweight. In these cases, families are informed about ways to improve the quality and quantity of food intake for children and adolescents, appropriate age-appropriate care, and the hygiene and nutrition of the family unit.
