” The world needs peace, life wants love, I share …” this is how boys and girls declaim one of the tenths (poems) that they have created together with the help of Telmo Angulo, a young man from Tumaco known for his activity in the recovery of the tenth Maroon of oral tradition in the Colombian Pacific.
The tenths are poems that narrate stories, events or daily situations with their own rhythm and style that, rescued by Telmo, have the cadence of hip hop or rap. The proposal in the classroom is not only artistic, since the tenths become songs that help to read and write.
The activity is part of our literacy improvement program, a competition in which Tumaco schoolchildren show great difficulties and which weighs down all other learning. Global Humanitaria trains teachers who participate in our program in literacy pedagogy. They are in charge of guiding more than 300 students in stage management, declamation and body expression with read aloud exercises. At the same time, they program reading activities at home to strengthen the support of families in their children’s learning.
The proposal, which is carried out in community libraries, reinforces Afro-Colombian cultural identity, and includes approaches to gender, ethnicity, and peacebuilding.

Likewise, throughout the year we promote writing in primary schoolchildren in Tumaco, promoting the creation of their first storybook on the digital platform “Estante Mágico”. In 2022, 100 student writers created their first book and participated in a launch event, where they signed their copies in the presence of the entire educational community.
