Since the beginning of November, the Global Humanitaria Colombia team has been working on the implementation and monitoring of school gardens at the Ciudadela Mixta Sede Obrero, Ciudadela Mixta Porvenir, and General Santander schools in Tumaco. With the active participation of students and teachers, the cultivation areas were marked out, a planting day was held, the land was cleared of weeds, and tires were painted to serve as containers for the substrate—sand and compost—and for planting vegetable seeds. Each container was labeled with the name of the corresponding crop to properly identify and organize the planted varieties.
Simultaneously, a cooking course was held for 20 families participating in the home gardens program, with the aim of strengthening their knowledge of healthy eating and personal and household hygiene practices. This hands-on workshop allowed participants to learn not only the importance of good nutrition, but also simple and creative ways to prepare suitable family meals.
Activities in schools are driving the consolidation of the project, promoting good environmental practices and strengthening hands-on learning within the educational community. In Tumaco, 11 schools participate in our comprehensive health and healthy habits promotion program, which reaches more than 1,200 elementary school children.
