In Kouadio-Yaokro, (Daloa) we are building a new school for 153 students with the help of the community, which provides the labor and takes care of making the bricks needed to build the center. KouadioYaokro is one of the 29 camps of Kouamékro, a population center that has around 5,000 inhabitants, living mainly from the cultivation of cocoa and coffee, corn, banana, and cassava.
The construction of classrooms, such as school canteens and latrines, are part of our interventions to improve children’s access to education and their permanence in school. At the same time, having a school nearby helps combat child labor on plantations (mostly cocoa), an activity that employs nearly 2 million minors. It is also important that the school has latrines and sanitation. It is easier for girls to stay in school, since 20% stop going when they have their period in adolescence due to the absence of toilets in the educational center. Repeated absences are a risk of dropping out of school, as well as child marriage or early pregnancy. This is the sixth school that Global Humanitaria has built in the Ivory Coast. Our actions also include literacy programs for women who are part of agricultural cooperatives. These courses include a gender and rights approach that has a positive impact on the schooling of their sons and daughters.
