PARTHA SARATHI MODAK, DIRECTOR OF NIDS, GLOBAL HUMANITARIA’S PARTNER IN INDIA

NIDS and Global Humanitaria work on educational and development projects in two areas of the State of West Bengal: the Sunderbans and Murshidabad. In the Sunderbans, specifically on the island of Kumirmari, one of the most remote and neglected areas of India, we have built and are now maintaining 16 educational centers, where tutoring classes are given and whose students mostly come from rural areas. Extreme poverty forms part of their lives, and many children would have otherwise been forced to drop out of school if it were not for this support.

We also distribute school breakfasts in the Sunderbans as nutritional supplement to encourage class attendance and reduce the incidence of infectious diseases. We also run a healthcare program for the school population and their families at Kumirmari Health Center, serving about 2,000 individuals. The latest addition to the Sunderbans is the Juan Valdivia School of Music, where 60 students are taught traditional music.

Since September 2016, we have been working in another area of West Bengal, in Murshidabad District. There, we have set up five educational centers and conduct activities to raise awareness within the community about hygiene and health, children’s rights, and women’s rights.
